Smarter Good was founded in 2012 by Jane Leu, a recognized social entrepreneur and Ashoka Fellow, to help nonprofit leaders focus on their missions and to increase social sector efficiency and effectiveness.
With offices in San Francisco, USA and Manila, Philippines, one of the rapidly growing social enterprise hubs in Asia, our dynamic team has helped over 80 nonprofits around the world focus on creating more impact in a wide range of issue areas.

Jane is an internationally recognized serial social entrepreneur and Ashoka Fellow with over 20 years of experience building successful start-up ventures, including Smarter Good, Upwardly Global, Ashoka U, craigslist nonprofit venture forum, and Harvard’s Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations. Jane teaches a course for MBAs in making social ventures happen at Stanford Graduate School of Business and is a co-author of Unicorns Unite: How Nonprofits and Foundations Can Build EPIC Partnerships. Passionate about socio-economic, ethnic, and geographic diversity in the social sector, Jane serves on the boards and advisory boards of start-ups, and mentors changemakers in the US and globally. She holds an MA from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and a BA cum laude from Tufts University. When not working across every global time zone, she enjoys hiking in the hills of California with her husband, Ted Levinson, a social finance professional, and their dog, Tully.
Tin has over 30 years’ experience in social work. A key leader for Smarter Good, she works with the Leadership Team to ensure the delivery of high-quality client services; setting and meeting of strategic, revenue, and impact goals; and developing and retaining a motivated, exceptional team. She is an inspiring and seasoned leader with a significant track record in developing long-term and impactful team and client relations, delivering client satisfaction, and managing outcomes. With a Master’s Degree in Social Work from New York University – where she also served as an adjunct professor – she is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Social Development at the University of the Philippines. To pass the time, Tin is a gin and tonic enthusiast, balanced by a daily yoga practice. She is a proud mom to Aimee who is a freshman at Washington State University.
Leah is a Development Management professional who worked in corporate retail for 21 years before pivoting to the social sector to pursue her mission. She focuses on designing intervention strategies at the community level to attain program outcomes, strengthening organizational capacities through coaching leadership, and developing sustainable objectives through business model innovation. She also works on change management and collaborates with and convenes stakeholders in forming strategic plans to advocate policy, finance strategies, and scale development initiatives. Leah is a wine enthusiast, dog lover, and yogi, and enjoys spending quality time with her husband and two children through traveling.
Jam has been with Smarter Good since day one, helping develop and refine writing processes and putting talent development practices in place. She brings over 15 years of writing and management experience from being second-in-command of a writers’ team at a knowledge outsourcing company. A journalism graduate cum laude of the University of the Philippines, she thrives on hiring and honing talent for the social sector and passing on to Smarter Gooders the fundraising knowledge and grantwriting best practices she has learned over the years. Jam is a solo traveller, an avid thrift shopper, a wannabe chef, and a proud nanay to daughter Jelena.
Monica leads Smarter Good’s business development and works with changemakers and organizations to meet their audacious impact goals. In her previous role as Development Manager, she led teams to support clients tackling criminal justice reform, education, workforce development, and community development – helping them raise over $20M collectively through pragmatic and long-term fundraising strategies. She has worked with schools on student-centered approaches to education; streamlined process and organized programs at Asia Society; and enhanced systems and programs in education and agriculture with Friends of Hope. Monica holds a BA in European Studies and a minor in Hispanic Studies and Development Management from Ateneo de Manila University. She loves hanging out at the beach and scuba diving.
Kayla leads teams in streamlining fundraising strategy and processes for organizations working at the forefront of solving today’s most pressing problems. She is passionate about finding solutions and creating excellent client experiences. Previously, Kayla led marketing strategy and campaigns for universities that make quality education accessible to low and mid-income families in the Philippines and managed corporate social responsibility programs. Outside of work, Kayla enjoys watching documentaries with her husband, playing video games, and is endlessly baby-proofing their home.
Kimmy supports Smarter Good clients through fundraising strategy development and project management. She has over eight years of experience in business development, marketing, and program management. She completed her master’s degree in Development Studies at the University of Sydney through the Australia Award Scholarship and holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Ateneo de Manila University. In her free time, Kimmy enjoys bingeing on crime shows and spending time with family and friends.
Macy works mainly with women-led organizations in creating impactful and compelling content that addresses gender inequality, poverty, clean water scarcity, unemployment, climate change, and child neglect—work that has given her restless feminist heart a voice. Macy has a Journalism degree from the University of Santo Tomas and was Editorial Content Manager for a B2B multichannel media company focusing on international trade. Macy is mom to Estelle and Oreo, wife to Erwin, and a “Constant Reader”, having read her first Stephen King novel at age 8.
Zane draws from over two decades of communication management and content creation experience in her dual role at Smarter Good. While ensuring cohesive and compelling fundraising content as an editor, she is also guiding the growing communications team and building and refining systems, processes, and standards with them. She has worked for different publications and communications firms, where she developed and implemented award-winning corporate social responsibility programs and campaigns for media, food, and travel companies. Zane loves nature, art, movement, and finding silence away from the loud city.
Bec is a Certified Nonprofit Accounting Professional (CNAP) and comes to Smarter Good with over 20 years of experience in the accounting field. She completed her BS Accountancy degree at San Sebastian College-Recoletos, and has worked as accounting manager for more than half of her career, mostly with large BPO and shared services companies such as Accenture, Xerox, Conduent, and IWG. Her area of expertise is General Accounting and Financial Reporting.
Outside of work, Bec happily does household duties and loves going out with her family to indulge on pizza and baby back ribs. She makes time to meet up and catch up with friends, watch foreign sci-fi/thriller movies, and play Mobile Legends with her son.
Rahn has led several research projects that have helped clients grow their impact for their beneficiaries, including providing a small business owner access to capital and helping a college student pay for her tuition fees. Rahn’s interest in community development stems from his experience as the former President of Ateneo EDGE, a youth organization that aims to empower underprivileged urban youth through education. A BS Management graduate from Ateneo de Manila University, he brings his skills in project management, marketing, and business development to the Smarter Good team. In his spare time, Rahn enjoys going on quests with his friends in Dungeons & Dragons.
Working with Smarter Good has allowed Shay to help stellar nonprofits all over the world expand their efforts to people and communities that are most in need. Her areas of expertise include water and sanitation (WASH), women’s empowerment, and poverty alleviation. She is a graduate of the University of Asia and the Pacific where she completed her master’s degree in Political Economy with a Specialization in International Relations and Development. On her days off, you can usually find her reading, learning to play new songs on her ukulele, or taking leisurely bike rides around her town.
Drea brings nearly two decades of experience in partnership and compliance management, project management, policy implementation, quality management, and revenue assurance and fraud management from Smart Communications. She graduated with a degree in Business Management from St. Paul University, Quezon City. Humanitarian at heart, she supports volunteer projects and community programs for environment and marine protection, indigenous community, the elderly, and women and children. She is a disaster relief volunteer for the Philippine Red Cross-Marikina Chapter and is a part of the The Climate Reality Leadership Corps. As she transitions to the social sector full-time, from Smart to Smarter Good, she hopes to be a driver of change, innovation, and passion for impact-building solutions. For fun, Drea travels to surf, free dive, and explore the many islands of the Philippines.
Maite is an editor and writer who wants to challenge and deepen her awareness, understanding, and use of language and words while helping Smarter Good’s clients navigate theirs. Maite holds an MFA in creative writing and a BA in literature. She is also a PQB-qualified proofreader, having trained with the Publishing Training Centre to complete its Essential Proofreading course, qualifying with Distinction. When she’s not working on other people’s words, Maite tries to write her own in between reading books; rewatching favorite series and movies; listening to music; and dabbling in the fiber arts.
Ivy started as a university instructor and on her pandemic retirement was working in strategic planning, human-centered design and digital transformation. In the 25 years in between she was writer, editor and photojournalist for a major Philippine newspaper and a communications planner and creative director working in higher education and inclusion advocacy. She took up Literature at University of Santo Tomas and Creative Writing and Comparative Literature at Silliman University. Ivy brings to Smarter Good her hybrid work experience and a lifelong learner’s attitude. She studied Filipino sign language to understand Deaf culture and for a deeper working relationship with Deaf teammates. Recently, she finally learned how to ride a bicycle.
Nathelle wants to incorporate her passion for storytelling and a newfound interest in the social change and nonprofit sector. She brings to Smarter Good a decade of combined experience in content creation as a writer, editor, and manager for a variety of clients and start-ups in the corporate space. Outside of work, she can be found wandering around Manila’s coffee shops, taking classes at a local dance studio, or discovering the latest shows on Netflix.
Dana brings more than nine years of creative experience in her role as Design Lead and project manager. She co-founded Vexter, a US-based boutique design agency that creates identities for startups and acts as an extension of existing organizations. She is skilled at leading and executing projects in UI/UX and web design, online ads, landing pages, email / mobile campaigns, and social media management, and her work has reached audiences in Europe, Asia, North America, South America, and Africa. Graduating from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a BFA in Interior Design, she has great appreciation for practical and intuitive design applications.
Jared’s project management approach in Smarter Good focuses on streamlined and meaningful research, client management, and conversations that bridge diverse perspectives. Since graduating with a BA in Development Studies from Ateneo de Manila University, he has gained experience through projects in environmental conservation, child protection, and government education initiatives – all while pursuing his MA in Sociology at the University of the Philippines. In his free time, he enjoys looking at watches, seeing old movies, and visiting art galleries.
Yusof works with Smarter Good’s clients across the world to pursue opportunities that can help scale their advocacies and impact. In his career, he has played key roles in scaling a social enterprise and the advocacy arm of a media organization through strategic fundraising, community development, business development, and project management. He graduated from Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Management and a minor in Philosophy. In his free time, Yusof daydreams about being on the golf course, plays mobile games, and hustles in the crypto space.
Gem dreams to take part in paving the way for meaningful and sustainable development projects that create lasting positive impact for clients, communities, and beneficiaries. With six years of experience in the strategic marketing and advertising industry, she hopes that her research, project management, client service, and creative work experience and strengths will help her bring this mission to life. Gem is a Communication Arts Graduate from the University of Santo Tomas, whose passion for storytelling translates through her love for homemade food, anecdote drafts, and good old long walks.
Bea aims to create positive impact in the global development sector by supporting clients in implementing programs that provide access and opportunities for the underserved. She has dedicated her professional life to working for various development sector agencies, and has over half a decade experience in program and volunteer management. She graduated from Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Development Students and a specialization in Development Management. Outside of work, Bea is a competitive Ultimate Frisbee player, a self-trained baker, and a dog mom.
Marvin brings with him a diverse experience of working in shared services, social development, and in the government. Through his engagements, he developed his skills in monitoring and evaluation, project management, and process improvement. He graduated from Ateneo de Manila University with a degree of Applied Mathematics major in Mathematical Finance and is pursuing his MA in Education major in Educational Technology at the University of the Philippines. Being an introvert, he recharges by watching Korean dramas and variety shows, listening to K-pop, and taking his ‘annual trips’.
Mar is dedicated to helping others reach their full potential. Through Smarter Good, Mar hopes to continue her mission and to create greater impact in the global social sector. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Economics from the University of the Philippines. She has worked in operations, partnerships, and account management with different types of organizations, but mainly enjoys helping organizations optimize their models to achieve the best results. In her spare time, Mar enjoys brainstorming with her friends on new business ventures or development work for their community.
Hubert endeavors to help leaders and organizations around the world and to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions that allow people, especially the marginalized, to live better lives. He is a Licensed Social Worker with over a decade of experience in capacity building and project management working with non-profits, local and national government agencies, and international organizations. In his free time, Hubert watches CEO interviews and monitors the crypto space and stock market.
Prior to working at Smarter Good, Kleine led disaster recovery programs in WASH. He supported the Philippines’ largest COVID-19 molecular laboratory in its data management in 2020, and has worked with young leaders across Asia and the Pacific in advocacy and policy development. Kleine holds a degree in Behavioral Sciences from De La Salle University Manila and is currently pursuing his Masters in Community Development at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Amidst the hustle and bustle of purposeful work, he finds meaningful rest in running and leisure reading.
At Smarter Good, Najee merges her background in communications and events management with her interest in community transformation. She has served vulnerable neighborhoods alongside churches, corporations, and nonprofits through active listening and storytelling for over a decade. She also received her MA in Social Justice from Kilns College, and a BA in European Studies and a minor in French Studies from Ateneo de Manila University. After work, Najee stays happy by reading, taking photos for small businesses, or figuring out how to live in view of eternity—all preferably with snacks.
By supporting nonprofits in reaching more communities and creating lasting impact, JP aims to be part of building an inclusive and sustainable future. A journalist by training, JP has worked with some of the country’s premier media organizations such as the Center for Media Freedom & Responsibility, the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, and ONE News. Outside of work, he usually spends his time producing a podcast with his friends. He also enjoys going for long rides outside the city or training in his local gym/dojo to decompress after a long week.
Nydia offers years of writing experience to help changemakers create sustained impact. Her diverse background includes developing business proposals and SEO content to help companies gain wins in competitive landscapes. She also developed materials for rabies education and technical and vocational education. Nydia holds a bachelor’s degree in Development Communication from the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. In her free time, she takes on home improvement projects with her girlfriend (if granted permission by their feline overlords).
Frankie is an advocate of connecting complex global issues to the stories of individuals whose lives these issues deeply impact. He brings this storytelling focus to his work in Smarter Good and as a productive contributor to the global development sector. With a BA in Mass Communications, he was previously an editor and curriculum designer for a language education firm, a content developer for digital marketing companies, and a freelance tutor to young EFL learners. He spends his free time playing with his two dogs, Curry and Parsley, binge-watching dark comedy and Korean variety shows, and keeping his indoor plants alive.
Pia aims to serve as an effective vessel for sharing the lived experiences of underrepresented communities. With an unwavering dedication to engaged anthropology and community empowerment, she pursues meaningful research on sustainable and inclusive development. Her background in marketing and research helps her to craft compelling and engaging content. She earned her BS Psychology degree from the University of the Philippines-Diliman and is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Anthropology. On weekends, Pia trades her feet for gills and fins.
Using her creativity and passion for storytelling, Alaine aims to help global nonprofits drive transformative change and contribute to creating a more sustainable future for all. She has a degree in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering from the University of the Philippines Los Baños and has previously worked with organizations that serve the agriculture and rural development sectors. Outside of work, Alaine enjoys playing video games, going on picnics, and learning about Asian cuisine.
Jastine aims to work with global changemakers in bringing life-changing impact on underserved communities. Driven by her genuine empathy for others and her experience in digital marketing and content writing, she hopes to help nonprofits and social enterprises continue making a positive difference. She graduated cum laude with a degree in Communication Arts from De La Salle University Manila and pursued further studies in Development Communications. During her free time, she finds joy in reading books, watching cute dog videos, spending quiet moments with nature, and helping in animal welfare projects.
Ten aspires to make social change achievable one step at a time. He is passionate about using his writing and research skills to create tangible outcomes for the Philippines and globally. He sees everything through an interdisciplinary lens thanks to his exposure to different social sectors during his undergraduate years. He recently worked with a national science club where he helped develop learning materials for students and teachers. To achieve work-life balance, Ten spends his free time reading, journaling, and playing computer and mobile games.
Believing that communication is key to success, Joven aims to learn more about development communication and use it to help social sector organizations create more impact on communities. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication from the University of the Philippines-Manila. Over the past years, he also wrote for Assortedge, Rappler, and other publications. Now focusing on his passion for gender and community development, he currently volunteers for organizations like Bahagsari and Ilog Pasiglahin. In his free time, Joven collects vinyl figures and records, especially the Lady Gaga ones.
A passionate storyteller, problem-solver, and staunch advocate for women’s and children’s empowerment, Andy aims to contribute to Smarter Good’s mission in creating a lasting impact. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Creative Writing from the University of the Philippines Diliman, and she brings her experience in writing for a youth-led, nonprofit organization dedicated to raise funds for those in need. In her downtime, she is often seen reading and writing fiction, fangirling over K-pop, and playing with her two dogs.
Elmo pursued his passion for writing after a brief stint in law school and has been writing since then. In the past 5 years Elmo has been writing for websites, social media, and doing marketing writing for organizations in the business sector. His first foray into the social sector was as a freelancer for Smarter Good in January 2023, and after which he decided to commit to Smarter Good full-time. In his free time, he enjoys exercising, playing games, and spending quality time with his pet cat.
Tif believes that empathy-driven communication is the key to amplifying marginalized voices, fostering inclusion, and catalyzing meaningful change. She was inspired to pursue a career in the social sector while obtaining her degree in Chemistry from the Ateneo de Manila University. In college, she worked with student organizations and participated in writing competitions to strengthen her passion for social causes and to develop her skills in communications. Tif enjoys doing yoga, going on long walks, and painting. When not in hermit mode, she goes cafe-hopping with friends and plays with pets.
Gela joins Smarter Good in hopes of helping nonprofit organizations in their writing projects. She draws from her 14 years of experience in writing, editing, and project management to help organizations communicate effectively. She has conceptualized, written, and revised copy, SEO articles, blog posts, thought leader pieces, and publications for businesses in the AI and technology, human resources, e-commerce, retail, fashion, and real estate industries. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from De La Salle University-Manila and studied creative writing for a few years in UP Diliman. She is passionate about yoga and dancing and has a love-hate relationship with running.
Jeoff hopes to hone their experience in communications and development work at Smarter Good. After studying Biology in college, they traded the sterile walls of the lab for the vastness of advocacy and work in the social sector. Outside of Smarter Good, they devote their time to meaningful causes for human rights. Beyond everything else, they enjoy spending time with their cats, exploring the outdoors, whipping up hearty meals, and occasionally tippling a glass of gin and tonic.
Through the power and heart of storytelling, Nyx aims to help Smarter Good forge empathetic and meaningful relationships towards social impact. Equipped with a degree in Development Studies from Ateneo de Manila University, she seeks to better understand the nuances and issues in gender equality, religion, sports and development, and urban planning. So far, she has served in administrative and researcher roles in the social sector. Whenever time permits, Nyx indulges herself in dance, rock climbing, and whatever piece of media catches her fancy.
Mia strives to create lasting change in the development sector by drawing from her skills as a storyteller and a student of the social sciences. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a minor in English Literature from Ateneo de Manila University. With a passion for the written word, she has worked as a journalist, copywriter, and corporate communicator specializing in sustainable development. She feels most at ease in the company of her four-legged friends, coffee in one hand, and a good read in another.
Tina loves creating impactful graphic and multimedia designs. She has over 8 years of experience working with nonprofit organizations and with a variety of design work, such as layout, branding, and video and podcast production. She is particularly passionate about causes related to children and youth, education, equality, and sustainability. She enjoys a good cup of coffee, and when she is not working, she enjoys reading books, watching documentaries and reruns of her favorite shows, and spending time with her dog.
AM brings to Smarter Good her extensive experience creating clear, thoughtful, and beautiful visuals. With roots in design and communications, she thrives in environments built for the service of the common good. She has worked with corporations, local and international nonprofits, and social enterprises. AM is always on the search for alternative ways of living and small notebooks that fit her designated notebook pouch.
France aims to combine her experience in engineering and education to create lasting partnerships that help nonprofits build safe, resilient communities. She previously worked as a property manager and a university instructor and holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Santo Thomas and a master’s degree in the same field from the University of the Philippines. France spends her free time binge-watching series, cycling, or re-learning Japanese. She dreams of completing a triathlon someday despite her fear of open water.
Through her research work at Smarter Good, Mira is pursuing her dream of contributing to positive social change. She develops research strategies and provides administrative and communications support for organizations around the world working in a variety of issue areas such as child welfare, criminal justice, economic development, environmental conservation, STEM education, WASH, and youth empowerment. A graduate of Asia Studies from the University of Santo Tomas, Mira enjoys spending time with her dogs and learning to be proficient in East Asian languages through films and TV series.
Tracy seeks to build lasting change by embracing new ideas and rejecting oppressive norms. Her passion for social development was fueled during her stay at the University of the Philippines, where she graduated Cum Laude with a Sociology degree. She is friendly with qualitative and quantitative research through her stints as a researcher in various academic studies and has a knack for strategizing and writing marketing content. Tracy is on a journey towards becoming a stronger athlete, liking coffee (which isn’t going well), and cloning her dog, Snowball, who will live forever.
Ericka aims to utilize her research and project management skills to provide development opportunities for clients by helping them keep pace with the world’s fast-paced environment and achieve a sustainable future. She graduated from De La Salle University with a degree in Development Studies and is a recipient of the Honorable Mention Award. Before she joined Smarter Good, she took on various engagements related to project management and worked as an Events Associate at a government agency. During her free time, Ericka enjoys singing and binge watching K-dramas.
As an advocate of social justice, Leanne aims to put her skills and time to good use in the hope of leaving the world a better place than when she found it. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Tourism with scholastic and leadership merits at the University of the Philippines. Before joining Smarter Good, she volunteered in student-led and nonprofit initiatives focused on sustainable and inclusive development. In her free time, Leanne enjoys baking, binge-watching shows, and playing with her dog, Skippy.
Advocacy and inspiring change have always been at the core of Kelly’s identity. Through Smarter Good, she aims to make a positive impact on the world along with other changemakers. Kelly graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Development Studies from the University of the Philippines Manila. She went on to work for a nonprofit, helping launch programs for women’s empowerment. Kelly also has experience in the e-commerce industry as operations analyst at Shopee. Outside of work, she spends her time reading, binge-watching Netflix shows, and spoiling her dog.
Isabelle aims to build long lasting impact that enables people to live up to their potential, achieve their dreams, and make the world a better place for the people today and for future generations. Isabelle graduated from the University of the Philippines Los Baños with a degree in Human Ecology, major in Family Development. She has gained experience in early childhood education, research in the construction industry, and virtual assistance. In her free time, she enjoys immersing in different worlds through reading books, binge-watching TV shows, and making music.
Nikki is challenged to further the mission of Smarter Good and aspires to create a lasting impact in the social sector through her work as a Development Associate. Before Smarter Good, she provided organizations with nonprofit marketing and fundraising support, and today, she continues to engage in community projects that tackle poverty alleviation. A graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman, she is a licensed interior designer and has worked on various residential and commercial projects in the Philippines. Nikki loves to play floorball, paint, and binge-eat french-fries.
Kenneth wishes to support institutions that foster a more fair and equitable society. He studied Social Sciences, minor in Development Management at Ateneo De Manila University. While in the university, he developed a passion for qualitative research, writing, and history as a Research and Writing Deputy at Ateneo LAHi (League of Atenean Historians) along with doing volunteer work for the Ateneo Social Sciences Department. Kenneth likes to work with computers, play video games, watch documentaries (preferably with a large bowl of ice cream), and collect shiny coins.
Marie teamed up with Smarter Good to continue to learn about the world and positively impact people. She has experience with research, coordination, and logistics. Her work as a Research Associate for a project involving Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services developed in her an interest in research and community development. Marie has also presented her bachelor’s thesis at a UP Manila webinar, from where she also graduated Cum Laude in Behavioral Sciences. During her off time, she likes to watch films and series of any genre and keep up with her favorite K-pop idols.
Melody gained a great sense of responsibility towards her community at a young age and has been keen to take part in programs and services that support underserved communities. She graduated with a degree in Home Economics Education from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. While studying, she actively engaged as a program assistant at YMCA Makati. She hopes to use her experience locally to reach many more disadvantaged communities and create an impact globally. In her free time, she loves watching KDramas and daydreaming about traveling to different countries.
A humanitarian at heart, Alex aspires to help transform the lives of the marginalized and create positive social impact.
