Job Description

Smarter Good is a professional services firm for the social impact sector, with over 70 ongoing nonprofit client partners that span the globe and more than 100 employees. We are seeking a mission-first, proactive and dynamic leader to drive and oversee all financial aspects of the company. The successful candidate will be skilled in decision-making that simultaneously prioritizes our social impact mission and ensures the financial health, growth and sustainability of the company.

The successful candidate will be responsible for strategic financial planning, risk assessment, and providing insights to drive Smarter Good’s objectives, as well as to lead the accounting department, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting. The Director will analyze financial performance, prepare reports and recommendations for executive review, and make high-level decisions to improve the company’s financial health. Extensive experience in finance and accounting, strong financial acumen, operating experience, a hands-on approach, and a proven ability to drive social impact and financial growth are essential for this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement financial strategies to support the organization’s social impact, growth and profitability.
  • Drive the development of annual budgets and financial forecasts, collaborating with key business leaders.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Provide financial analysis and insights to support strategic decision-making.and long-term growth.
  • Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis.
  • Collaborate with department heads to ensure budget adherence.
  • Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements and reports following GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and other financial documents. Prepare financial reports and presentations for the board of directors and executive management.
  • Oversee the company’s financial operations, including cash flow management, expense control, and debt management.
  • Manage the maintenance and integrity of the general ledger.
  • Ensure all financial transactions are recorded accurately and timely.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Implement and maintain effective internal controls to ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial data.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and procedures, as well as external regulations.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and manage audit processes.
  • Identify and mitigate risks to the organization’s financial health.
  • Oversee the implementation of internal controls to safeguard assets and prevent fraud.
  • Perform other responsibilities in leadership and development, and process improvement and technology as deemed required by role.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience with a mission-driven organization. Must demonstrate commitment to the triple bottom line approach to be considered for this role. Board and volunteer experience will be considered.
  • Experience with professional services/client services businesses is desirable.
  • Strong leadership, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in English, with the propensity to successfully foster new and maintain long-standing relationships, internally and externally.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Master’s degree and/or CPA preferred.
  • At least 10 to 15 years of experience in accounting and finance with 3 years of leadership experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of Philippine tax laws and regulations. US tax laws and regulation knowledge is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (preferably Xero) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, and other business software.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and delegate responsibilities effectively.
  • Outstanding integrity and moral judgment, and the ability to independently make important decisions under pressure.
